USA West Jesuit Gathering

08-13-2017Pastor's LetterRev. Daniel J. Sullivan, S.J.

On Monday, July 31, we celebrated St. Ignatius Day in honor of St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit Order. In a message from the Provincial, Father Scott Santarosa, SJ,“Ignatius' impact is still felt today, nearly 500 years after his founding of the Society of Jesus. Today, Jesuits and our lay partners who walk with us in ministry are impacting the lives of people through education, Ignatian spirituality, and service to the poor and marginalized. We don't just meet people halfway, we go to them. We don't shrink from challenges, we rise to them. We change with the times, facing emerging needs head on, always grounded by our steady faith. Together, we are contemplatives in action. Together, in the example of St. Ignatius, we are a force for good.”

Father Santarosa is the provincial of our new province, Jesuits West, that combines all Jesuit ministries of the USA western states from Anchorage to Arizona. (jesuitswest.org) This new province is part of the Society of Jesus' worldwide effort to foster greater collaboration among our works while enabling the Jesuit fathers to meet emerging demands of a dynamically changing world.

On August 18, our St. Francis Xavier community, students from the elementary school and Brophy College Prep, will gather with other Arizona Jesuit ministries to celebrate our unique Jesuit characteristic. As a parishioner, you are part of this moment in time. To provide you with the guide by which Jesuits West will direct its efforts, we've reprinted the mission and vision:

Vision: To be a community of Jesuits and apostolic partners formed by the Gospel and the Spiritual Exercises to expand Jesus' ministry of healing, reconciling and teaching in service of the diverse peoples of the West.

Mission: To invite all people to experience the transformative power of God's love through our educational, pastoral and social ministries.

Though we have used the IHS symbol previously on parish literature, you will begin to see it more frequently on our parish documents.  The IHS symbol is a monogram of the Greek spelling of the holy name of Jesus.  Surrounded by the rays of the sun it is used with the cross and three nails as an emblem of the Society of Jesus.

Again, we encourage you to visit the Jesuits West website, jesuitswest.org, to learn more about this pivotal, and most significant transition. Of course, any of the Jesuit priests assigned to our parish or Brophy College Prep will be happy to answer any questions you might have…feel free to speak with one of us after any mass or call the parish administrative offices: 602-279-9547.
