My Story Continues

08-20-2019From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

After completing 12 years of Jesuit formation, I was ordained in 1979 by Bishop Francis Quinn, auxiliary of San Francisco, who ordained me and five others at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. That summer I was here at SFX for about two weeks and it was here I celebrated my first English wedding. Does anyone know if Eli Enriquez & Denise Javinelli are still married?

My life as a Jesuit (I often describe myself as an “off-the-rack” Jesuit; unlike most Jesuits, I have no extra degrees, no additional letters after the “S.J.”) began with a perfect assignment -- as pastor to a tiny Mexican parish in Santa Ana, California, Our Lady of Guadalupe. How Spanish-speaking was it? There was only one scheduled English Mass a week!

I found the parishioners there to be so loving and caring that I commented to my family and friends that I could spend the rest of my life there and all my needs would be taken care of.

But, alas, I was only there for three years. In my second year a new pastor came to the parish. He was someone I did not know and we worked well together for the first year. After that, things began to fall apart. When the provincial came for his annual visitation, I knew that his plan was to transfer me to another parish.

I was very disappointed but with prayer and good spiritual direction I left the parish in peace. The memories I have of Our Lady of Guadalupe last to this day and I am greatly appreciative of the love and guidance I received from the faithful parishioners there.

Unfortunately, it was at the time of my transfer that my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

More to follow next week.....

Please continue to keep the words of the Gospel close to your heart: Luke 13:22-30.
