Faith Formation

02-16-2020From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

Dear Beloved in Christ,

As pastor here at St. Francis Xavier Parish, I am learning more about how our parish has traditionally carried out the important work of faith formation of our children and young people and prepared them to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. I have reflected on the good work being done here and have listened to the concerns and hopes of many parents, grandparents, and others who care deeply about our parish faith formation efforts.

I’ve noticed that, for a variety of reasons, parents and families are not always well prepared to pass along the Catholic faith to their children. Sometimes it is because parents themselves have not been properly rooted in the Catholic faith or feel unsure about their readiness to teach and model that life within their family. Quite frankly, it saddens me when I don’t see more families celebrating Sunday Mass together with the parish community, even those who have children in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS), EDGE, Life Teen and St. Francis Xavier Elementary School.

As a longtime parish priest and pastor, I believe our parish and families will be better served by looking to a new vision for faith formation and sacramental preparation. To that end, I am taking steps to initiate a new program that will be in place in time for the 2020-21 school year. I have asked Suzie Malloy to assume a newly created role of Director of Christian Education for our parish. Suzie, who has extensive experience working in faith formation will establish this new program with a core team.

As guiding principles, I have asked to ensure the following:

  • To engage all families of our parish into a more active participation into the life of the Church, centering this participation on the celebration of the Eucharist at Sunday Mass.
  • To focus the program on learning through the life of the Church and its liturgical seasons, sacraments, liturgy and community.
  • As a Jesuit parish, great attention will be given to justice, service, spirituality and prayer as the foundation of our Jesuit, Catholic identity.
  • As a community of followers of Christ, we should be better trained on how to develop informed consciences; based on Scripture and our Catholic tradition through proper reflection and discernment.

For families who have children in their second year of CGS currently preparing to receive Confirmation or Holy Communion this year – don’t worry! We look forward to celebrating these Sacraments with you all at the end of April as planned. If you are an EDGE or Life Teen young person preparing for Confirmation and/or Holy Communion, you will also receive these Sacraments as planned. If you have children in the first year of CGS, while the program may be offered in a different way, you can be assured that your children will receive Confirmation and Holy Communion next year.

There will be much work done over the coming months to make this change a reality. Later this Spring, I will explain further how our new program will work and what you and your families can expect next year. I am convinced that this change will be one of great benefit not only to our children and young people, but to parents and our entire parish family. As your pastor, I take your faith formation seriously and I am committed to making sure that everyone in our community is well prepared and actively engaged.

Rev. Robert A. Fambrini, S.J., Pastor
