Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving

03-01-2020From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are three traditional practices of Lent. They are meant to help us turn away from self-defeating habits and open ourselves to God so he can help us be the people we were created to become. Lent truly reflects back to Jesus’ time fasting for 40 days in the wilderness before beginning His earthly ministry.

During this season of penitence and preparation, many people think of giving up certain things such as a favorite food or a life habit they are trying to better control. It is a sacrificial act being offered up to God as a humble offering to God from your life given to Him for a time. All of this is done so we can prepare ourselves and be ready to celebrate at Easter the resurrection and new life of Jesus who offered himself for our redemption.

It is my hope that the information you find in this booklet will help you and your family as you go through your Lenten journey. It contains information about the Masses and religious services that mark this sacred time, from Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday. This includes opportunities for the reception of the Sacraments, especially confession and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I hope you will join us in these beautifully rich and meaningful liturgical celebrations. This booklet also discusses ways to enhance your prayer life and offer resources and opportunities to do that.

In particular, I hope you will mark your calendars to join us for the Lenten Parish Mission on March 1 and 2. It will be wonderful way to begin Lent and our speaker is a wonderful musician and noted speaker rooted in our spiritual tradition. Don’t miss it! More details can be found in this booklet. Also, check out the other dynamic prayer resources that are included on these pages.

You will also find here details about fasting and almsgiving and how they can also be a part of your Lenten experience. Both practices are about giving of oneself out of love for others, just as Jesus did for each of us. There is deep grace that can be found in praying through the Passion of our Lord. There is also deep consolation to be found when we enter the joy of the Lord at Easter. In his humanness, he triumphed over death so that we might do the same and live together with Him in eternal joy – and forever give and help others as He does.

Blessings for a prayerful Lent and a joyous Easter!
