The Jesuit in the Back Row

05-10-2020From Fr. FambriniMr. Simon Zachary, S.J.

If you've recently been tuning into our streamed Masses, you may have wondered who some of the younger guys (without grey hair) in the back seats are. My name is Simon Zachary, SJ, and I like to call myself a teenage Jesuit. I have been in the Society of Jesus for seven years now, and am approaching my last three years of formation, aka training, before priestly ordination. My current work involves teaching across the parking lot from St. Francis, over at Brophy. I teach, and hopefully don't bore, juniors and seniors with coursework in economics and international politics. I also moderate a handful of clubs, which are basically an excuse to get to know students just a bit more.

As I grow into this Jesuit life, the guiding questions I ask myself each day are:

  1. Have I shown students that God loves them; and,
  2. Can I ensure that any taught material has a relevant tie-in to these young men's lives.

As I approach priesthood, it has been a real joy both to learn about the Jesuits and to walk with students in and outside the classroom (which is now virtual). It has also been a real pleasure to join the priests at SFX, and you, for Mass each Sunday. Fr. Bob, Fr. George, Fr. Tony, and previously, Fr. Dan, Fr. Peter, and Fr. Joe -- these guys are my heroes. It has been a gift to hear their homilies and to pray with them.

Pope Francis once urged clergy to "have the smell of their sheep," and I know the priests at St. Francis fully embrace this. Especially during these unsettling times, our Jesuits are right by your side in the spirit of accompaniment. We pray for you and for your families each day at our house chapel masses, and we are painfully aware of the many hardships you have faced and continue to face. And yet, in this Easter season, the joy of Jesus' resurrection, the hope that goodness prevails, that out of suffering comes abundant blessings, is ever on our minds and hearts. I'm privileged to hear this message of hope resounding evermore!

I leave for my next assignment later this summer. I'll carry this message of hope with me as I move to Berkeley for further theological studies. Please pray for me, as I will continue to pray for each of you, and my brothers in Christ here in the Phoenix Jesuit Community.
