Heart Speaks to Heart

02-14-2021From Fr. SauerFr. Anthony P. Sauer S.J.

A bit like Mr. Rogers kindly querying “will you be my neighbor?, the somewhat shy and timid little girl passes a valentine – newly created in class – across the aisle to another equally timid, shy person: “will you be my Valentine?”

Happy Valentine’s Day, good friends! Albeit a Sunday, we remember thisspecial holiday of Love dating way back in history to the days of the martyrs. What we may not fully realize as we come to church this sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time is that Jesus Christ Himself leans over and asks each of us, timid and shy though we may be: “Will you be my Valentine?”

He offers His Scripture, His Eucharist, His Community and His very life and death to everyone of us daily. Even as we enter SFX Church, sadly some of us forget that offer of Love – human and divine – which is given to us eternally, and we sometimes lack appreciation and understanding that Christ’s intense, personal, intimate love for each one of us is what our religion is all about.

It’s not rules and regulations, laws and legalism, but deep and profound Love, loyal and true – love that is everlasting! So let us this Sunday celebration of Valentine’s Day accept the Heart of Jesus on fire with Love for each of usand return that love with similar hearts afire for Christ and for our sisters and brothers – in loving service, kind, graciousand compassionate care.

God bless you and yours always! And, again, Happy Valentine’s Day! Cardinal Newman’s motto was “Cor ad Cor Loquitur” – “Heart speaks to Heart.” Allow Jesus’s Love to speak to your heart today and you will never – ever – be the same!
