Light at the End of the Penitential Tunnel

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday – Laetare (“Rejoice Sunday”) was our lenten break given by the church to help remind us that no matter what our practices of prayer and penance are these 40 days and, even as we contemplate the Suffering and Death of Jesus Himself, we know there is Light at the end of the penitential tunnel: the triumphant Resurrection of Christ, Our Savior!

Yet, folks, as the Pandemic may be coming to some sort of a conclusion, there is one more green glimmer of light in the days ahead: March 17 – St Patrick’s Day! – when not only those in the Emerald Isle, but all nationalities celebrate this winsome saint of the shamrocks. It is another tiny bit of a break in Lenten sacrifice, AMDG, of course.

Our recent, wonderful Novena of Grace taught us that the loving Lord is with us in joys and in sorrows, in sickness and in health, in celebration and sadness – that we are profoundly renewed by His Scripture, by His Eucharistic Love, and by the Christian-Catholic community we share.

Let us then, cheerfully, courageously, lovingly go forward as Paul and Xavier did to bring the Gospel to every creature – and like John the Baptist make the rough ways straight for the Coming of the Lord. Let us heal the wounds about us and try to right all wrongs we see in the faithful Spirit of service which is the essence of Lent and Easter!

Queridos Amigos,

El Domingo pasado - Laetare ("Domingo de Alegría") fue nuestra Pausa cuaresmal dada por la Iglesia para ayudarnos a recordar que no importa cuáles sean nuestras prácticas de oración y penitencia en estos 40 días y, aun cuando contemplemos el Sufrimiento y la Muerte del mismo Jesús, sabemos que hay Luz al final del túnel penitencial: ¡la Resurrección triunfante de Cristo, Nuestro Salvador!

Sin embargo, amigos, mientras la Pandemia puede estar llegando a una especie de conclusión, hay un rayo de luz verde más en los días venideros: El 17 de Marzo - ¡El Día de San Patricio! - en el que no sólo los de la Isla Esmeralda, sino todas las nacionalidades, celebran a este simpático santo de los tréboles. Es otra pequeña pausa en el sacrificio cuaresmal, AMDG, por supuesto.

Nuestra reciente y maravillosa Novena de la Gracia nos enseñó que el amoroso Señor está con nosotros en las alegrías y en las penas, en la enfermedad y en la salud, en la celebración y en la tristeza - que somos profundamente renovados por Su Escritura, por Su Amor Eucarístico y por la comunidad Cristiano-Católica que compartimos.

Vayamos, pues, con alegría, con valor y con amor, como hicieron Pablo y Javier para llevar el Evangelio a toda criatura, y como Juan el Bautista enderezando los caminos difíciles para la Llegada del Señor. Sanemos las heridas que nos rodean y tratemos de enderezar todos los males que vemos con el fiel Espíritu de servicio que es la esencia de la Cuaresma y la Pascua.
