The Grace of the Resurrection

04-04-2021From Fr. FambriniFr. Robert Fambrini, SJ

The fourth and final week of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius is Jesus risen from the dead. Since we are always living in the time of Jesus resurrected, the retreat never really ends. During the retreat, the retreatant is asked to pray for a specific grace, one geared to the spirit of that particular week. The grace for the fourth week is to enter into the joy of Jesus raised from the dead. This is more difficult than one would image. (Most of us find it easier to remain in the third week of Jesus’s passion and death, especially after this past year because of all we have lost).

But with more shots in arms, we are beginning to see our way to hope. Many years ago, someone gave me a good example of what it means to enter into this fourth week spirit. It is like this: two sisters growing up together are best of friends experiencing at times the usual competitive spirit which tends to exist among siblings. As they age, they both begin to hold out hope for marriage. The younger sister meets a young man, gets engaged, picks the date and asks her older sister to be her maid of honor. The older sister puts aside her envy and enters into her sister’s joy. It is not her joy but she is asked to share in it. We are asked this day, this season, to enter into a joy which is not ours but which is the victory Jesus has won for us. Let us go forth and share this joy with others. He lives!
