The Ascension of the Lord

To quote biblical scholar, Dianne Bergant: “Today we stand awestruck watching Jesus ascend into the clouds of heaven, there to be enthroned at the right hand of God. Today is a day to be overwhelmed by the reality of the divinity of the one we have known in his humanity…we live between the time of his departure and the time of his return.”

Jesus now lives in his risen and divine body. He is no longer bound by time and space. The Kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed is a universal message. Christ who ascended into heaven in his risen body carries on what he began on earth through his new body, the community of believers.

Jesus’ ascension mission to his followers is: “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” Jesus does not leave us on our own. He promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we will celebrate on May 23rd, Pentecost Sunday. We, the community of believers, are Jesus’ body now to spread the Good News. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out our mission, our vocation as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Hoy es un día para dejarnos abrumar por la realidad de la divinidad del que hemos conocido en su humanidad… vivimos entre el momento de su partida y el momento de su regreso ”.

Jesús ahora vive en su cuerpo divino y resucitado. Ya no está limitado por el tiempo y el espacio. El Reino de Dios que proclamó Jesús es un mensaje universal. Cristo, que ascendió al cielo en su cuerpo resucitado, continúa lo que comenzó en la tierra a través de su nuevo cuerpo, la comunidad de creyentes.

La misión de la ascensión de Jesús a sus seguidores es: "Sal por todo el mundo y proclama el evangelio a toda criatura". Jesús no nos deja solos. Promete el don del Espíritu Santo, que celebraremos el 23 de mayo, domingo de Pentecostés. Nosotros, la comunidad de creyentes, somos el cuerpo de Jesús ahora para difundir la Buena Nueva. Tenemos el poder del Espíritu Santo para llevar a cabo nuestra misión, nuestra vocación como discípulos de Jesucristo.
