Signs of the Times

11-28-2021From Fr. TeodoroFr. George Teodoro, SJ

Today’s Gospel tells us to “stand tall and raise your heads” and pay attention to the signs of the times, so that we might be ready when the Lord comes. The images in the Gospel can be frightening – signs in the heavens, the shaking of the earth, the roaring of the sea – and one way to respond to these could be to lock our doors, hide under our blankets, and mistrust strangers who come our way.

But as St. Paul reminds us, another way to prepare for the coming of Christ is to be more open and more loving. He prays, “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all… so as to strengthen your hearts… for the coming of our Lord Jesus.”

So let Paul’s prayer be ours as well as we begin this Advent season. May the signs of the times, which can seem so troubling, not cause us to withdraw from the love of God and the love of neighbor. Rather, let us strengthen ourselves by loving and caring for one another more than ever. In this way, we become the signs for others – witnesses to the faith which lights a way in the darkness.

Accordingly, the parishioners, students, and staff of St. Francis Xavier have prepared some signs of love, faith, and hope in this year’s Advent Reflection Book. Please take one with you or find it online, so that we might pray together for the coming of God’s light into this world.
