Evangelization

Why does the word Evangelization sometimes intimidate us?

It’s interesting, I think every Christian at some point on the journey (I sure do hope so) will ask themselves, “How do I Evangelize?” In fact, when I speak to Catholics about Evangelization the overwhelming sentiment is that they don’t feel equipped or confident to be evangelists.

In addition to this, people have also shared they feel it may not be their job or an unworthiness, because they are not theologians or experts in Sacred Scripture. The last thing they want to do is lead somebody in the wrong direction.

I must admit, I totally understand all these concerns, and have wrestled with them at different times in my own life. Recently, I shared this thought with a wise priest, and he responded, “Cande, you are a sinner! However, remember in the New Testament, the evil one has two names that he is referred to: the liar and the accuser. Don’t let him accuse you – he is a liar!”

Of course, this wise priest is correct! We all are sinners, but it is through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we have hope. We are compelled to share the hope of Jesus! This is the good news!

Everyone likes to share good news – think about it! Someone gets married, there is a new baby, a new job or we watch a good movie – we want to share it! We really don’t think about the best way to share – we just do it naturally with joy when the time presents itself!

Evangelization should be no different; however, we must know Jesus! We can only tell the story if we know Him and His story!

Here are the important things to remember when evangelizing.

  1. Know Jesus’ story (Hint: His story is a love story between God and us)
  2. Know your story (Hint: How did you encounter Jesus)
  3. Invite the person to know Jesus

Jesus is the one who will help answer the questions others may have. Don’t let the evil one deceive you, and make you feel that your lack of knowledge should prevent you from proclaiming God.

Trust in the Lord that by sharing your story, speaking about Jesus and His love for us, and how He has impacted your life will be the spark that lights a fire in their faith.

Just one more thing – sharing the story is only the first part of Evangelization. The second part is to invite them to know Jesus. You must be willing to take them to Jesus. (Hint: take them to a Tabernacle or Eucharistic Adoration)

When you invite someone to meet Jesus, you are potentially (if they accept) changing the trajectory of their entire life, which will ultimately affect the lives of countless others! That is kind of a BIG DEAL!

Remember, you don’t have to be a Theologian, Sacred Scripture Expert, Priest or Religious– you simply need to know Jesus and be willing to share Him!
