A Gospel Reflection

12-04-2022From Fr. TeodoroFr. George Teodoro, S.J.

Today’s reading from Isaiah gives us a poetic glimpse of the true meaning of shalom. Shalom, in Hebrew, is not merely peace in the sense of absence of conflict. It is a greeting and a wish – peace be with you.

It is a peace that arises from true reconciliation and cooperation, not just a chilly détente where we agree not to talk about the things that divide us.

The early American painter and Quaker minister Edward Hicks depicts this shalom in his series of paintings called “The Peaceable Kingdom.” In this painting, we see the lion and the ox, the wolf and the lamb gathered together, with little children playing among them – a fulfillment of Isaiah’s biblical vision for the Kingdom of Heaven. But in the background, we see American representatives making peace with Native American tribes – a vision of shalom here on earth as a reflection of the harmony found in heaven.

Let us pray that we can also strive to build this peaceable kingdom – the true shalom that only God can bring. Let us build it in our families, in our communities, and in our world.
