My Story Continues

09-15-2019From Fr. FambriniFather Robert Fambrini, S.J.

Some would describe the formation of a Jesuit with words such as “long”, “thorough,” even “different.” Truthfully, it is all of this. In my case it was quite long, twelve years from entrance right after high school to ordination. Jesuit formation is certainly thorough. There are certain stages we all must go through but within those stages, there can be much creativity. The formation is shaped toward what the individual Jesuit needs for his preparation. As I have described earlier, my formation was geared toward pastoral work. Jesuit formation is different in that it is quite unique. All religious orders require a year-long novitiate during which time the novice receives an education in the spirituality and charism of the particular congregation. The Jesuits have a two-year novitiate. To my knowledge, all male religious orders have their members pronounce their solemn vows before ordination. Not the Jesuits! I was ordained twelve years before I pronounced my final vows. I was not delayed for poor performance!

Before final vows, every Jesuit ends his formation with tertianship, from the Latin word meaning “third year.” Two years of novitiate at the beginning before profession of first vows and a third year of novitiate at the end before solemn profession. As in the novitiate, the Jesuit as a tertian once again makes the 30-day Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, engages in apostolic ministries, and studies the history of the Society. This wonderful pause in apostolic ministry becomes a spiritual sabbatical.

After my first assignment as pastor in San Diego, I made my tertianship in New York, just off the Fordham campus. It was a typical tertianship experience with Jesuits from around the world: Hungary, Japan, India, South Africa, Australia and the US.

Since my work as a priest to this point had been solely in parishes, I received assignments as a chaplain in a hospital in the South Bronx and, later in the year during Lent, to a retreat house on Long Island. At both places I made lasting friendships. At the hospital, I met a young man from Ecuador who had lost his leg in a car accident. With the help of some generous friends, I was able to get him a prosthesis which eventually allowed him to resume work. When my mother and sister came for a visit, Richard and his family insisted that we have dinner in their humble apartment.

On Long Island I was befriended by a diocesan priest, who, coincidently, was once a Jesuit brother. The man, who passed away six years ago, was a wonderful pastor and later in life underwent great suffering. His holiness was evident to me by the way he lived his vocation to the end, never blaming God but always accepting.

I was blessed to finish out the year by traveling to Bolivia to brush up on my Spanish. I then took the slow route home, passing through Peru to visit where I did my regency 13 years earlier, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, and El Salvador to visit a classmate of mine doing heroic ministry in the midst of a civil war.

In August 1989 I became the pastor of Hollywood.
