Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! It may not be your personal birthday, but today, the Feast of Pentecost, is often considered the birthday of our Church.

Why? Because Pentecost signifies the end of Jesus’ earthly work among us, and the beginning, the birth, of the disciples’ mission and of our mission – to carry on His ministry, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to all the world. Hence, today can be considered the birthday of our Church.

In the gospel, Jesus says to His disciples and to us: “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you. And with that, He breathed upon them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit.” To carry on Jesus’ ministry of compassion, mercy and love is quite a tall order, and He knew that we would need some help. So, He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us. The Holy Spirit is our birthday gift!

The gifts of the Holy Spirit include understanding, prudence, courage, knowledge, piety – in the sense of willingness and desire to serve God, and fear of the Lord – not to be afraid of the Lord, but rather to have profound respect and selfless love for God.

Some birthday gifts are better than others. Over the years, we may have returned or exchanged more than one. But the gift of the Holy Spirit is quite precious! How wonderful it would be if each of us, in our own little ways, would try to use these gifts to do what Jesus hopes we will do.
