And The Cannonball Rolls On

07-31-2022From Fr. TeodoroFr. George Teodoro, S.J.

We have been celebrating the Ignatian Jubilee year, from the 500th anniversary of the cannonball at the battle of Pamplona in 1521, to the 400th anniversary of his canonization in 1622. And now as we draw to the close of the Jubilee year, it’s time to ask, “what next?”

The cannonball that we’ve been commemorating wasn’t special in and of itself. In fact, is appeared to be a disaster in the life of Ignatius – it led to almost two years of painful healing and rehabilitation. And yet God was able to use that time to sneak the Holy Spirit into Ignatius and inspire the steps of life that would lead to the creation of the Spiritual Exercises, the founding of the Society of Jesus, and the spread of the Gospel around the world.

Over these past two years, we have also dealt with disaster, both communally and personally. The pandemic has changed our lives in big ways and small, revealing rifts in our nation, our families, and maybe even our own hearts. Many of us have lost jobs and businesses, lost out on opportunities, or lost loved ones.

But as the story of Ignatius reminds us, for God, nothing is lost that cannot be found, and these challenging times may have revealed to us what is most important to us: faith, family, and connection. Let us trust that the God who was present in Ignatius’ conversion is still with us today. And as we conclude this Jubilee year, let us trust in the words that we have been praying together: May the Holy Spirit who animated your conversion, guide our next steps. Help us to create all things anew in Christ, knowing that God’s love and grace are enough. Amen.
