Q: Why do we mark our foreheads with ashes at the beginning of Lent?

02-26-2023Why do we do that?Fr. George Teodoro, S.J.

From ancient Hebrew tradition, people marked their sorrow and repentance by putting on sackcloth and smearing their face with ashes. They were seen as a public display of humility – of rejecting all that society found attractive or valuable. The wearing of ashes became a sign to others that you not only felt sorrow in your heart, but wanted to be held publicly accountable for one’s sins.

Moreover, in Jewish custom, ashes were a sign of communal sorrow and repentance. For instance, when Jonah preaches to the city of Nineveh, the entire population of the city marks themselves with ashes and prays that God might not smite them for their wicked ways.

At the beginning of Lent, we recognize our need for repentance and forgiveness, both as individuals and as a community by continuing this ancient tradition of marking ourselves on the forehead with ashes. The cross reminds of our destination – the Passion of Christ, while the prayer calls us to humility and repentance. There are a few variations of the prayer, but the primary ones say either “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” (a call to humility) or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” (a call to repentance). Then for the rest of the day, these ashes mark us a member of the Catholic community – a community which together is also in need to repentance, but also wants to witness to the cross of Christ to those around us.

One last note: the ashes for Ash Wednesday are created by burning the palms from Palm Sunday the year before. They are a sign of repentance from the community that first lauded and then rejected Christ during his Passion.
