A pilgrimage is a physical and spiritual journey to a place of significance to the faith. For generations, Christians have journeyed to the Holy Land to walk in the steps of Christ, or to Compostela in Spain to honor St. James, or Tepeyac in Mexico to pray with Our Lady of Guadalupe where she appeared to Juan Diego. As Benedict XVI put it: “To go on pilgrimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art, or history. To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe.”
A pilgrimage goes far beyond mere tourism. It begins with the motive and intent of the pilgrim: to pray for a particular grace, to grow closer to Christ or one of the saints by following in their footsteps, or by seeking a blessing or healing for oneself or another. Pilgrimage always begins with prayer. Moreover, on a pilgrimage, the journey is as important as the destination. Those who walk the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem or the Camino de Santiago in Spain experience not only the history of those places, but also encounter the love of God through the neighbors and fellow pilgrims they meet along the way.
Once arriving at the destination, pilgrims connect themselves – body, mind, and spirit – to God, to Christ, to the saints, and to the millions of pilgrims over hundreds of years who have walked those same pathways. By standing in the same places as our ancestors in faith did so many years ago, we are changed in ways big and small, finding God in much-anticipated or in totally surprising ways.
But pilgrimages do end at the destination. The pilgrim returns home transformed by their experience, and filled with the Holy Spirit, to share their faith journey with others. The pilgrim becomes an evangelist, inspired and empowered by their journey, to share the Good News of their faith with those around them.
Una peregrinación es un viaje físico y espiritual a un lugar de importancia para la fe. Durante generaciones, los cristianos han viajado a Tierra Santa para seguir los pasos de Cristo, oa Compostela en España para honrar a Santiago, o al Tepeyac en México para rezar con Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe donde se apareció a Juan Diego. Como dijo Benedicto XVI: “Peregrinar no es simplemente visitar un lugar para admirar sus tesoros naturales, artísticos o históricos. Peregrinar significa realmente salir de nosotros mismos para encontrar a Dios allí donde se ha revelado, donde su gracia ha resplandecido con particular esplendor y ha producido ricos frutos de conversión y de santidad en los creyentes».
Una peregrinación va mucho más allá del mero turismo. Comienza con el motivo y la intención del peregrino: orar por una gracia particular, acercarse a Cristo oa uno de los santos siguiendo sus pasos, o buscando una bendición o curación para uno mismo o para otro. La peregrinación siempre comienza con la oración. Además, en una peregrinación, el viaje es tan importante como el destino. Aquellos que recorren el Camino de la Cruz en Jerusalén o el Camino de Santiago en España experimentan no solo la historia de esos lugares, sino que también encuentran el amor de Dios a través de los vecinos y compañeros peregrinos que encuentran en el camino.
Una vez que llegan al destino, los peregrinos se conectan (cuerpo, mente y espíritu) con Dios, con Cristo, con los santos y con los millones de peregrinos que durante cientos de años han recorrido esos mismos caminos. Al estar en los mismos lugares en los que nuestros antepasados en la fe lo hicieron hace tantos años, somos cambiados en formas grandes y pequeñas, encontrando a Dios en formas muy esperadas o totalmente sorprendentes.
Pero las peregrinaciones terminan en el destino. El peregrino regresa a casa transformado por su experiencia y lleno del Espíritu Santo, para compartir su camino de fe con los demás. El peregrino se convierte en evangelista, inspirado y empoderado por su camino, para compartir la Buena Nueva de su fe con quienes lo rodean.
